DoD provides distance learning

By Laura Yaun, Hands-on Labs, Inc.

In March of 2011, The Department of Defense put into effect DANTES Mission. The Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support says it all in its name. It was designed “to support off-duty, voluntary education programs of the Department of Defense and to conduct special projects and development activities in support of education-related functions of the Department.”

DANTES provides free information and assistance in every way, making it easy for people in the Service, or their family members, wanting to obtain post-secondary education to achieve their goals.

Counselor support programs help the transition into civilian life much easier.DISCOVER is an online planning program that participating education institutions can access through CAGIS (Computer Assisted Guidance Information System.)

DISCOVER provides online career planning such as three career assessments that give suggestions based on the Service member’s answers. Guidance in career paths by taking into consideration the Service member’s school and occupation history, job-seeking skills, etc., is very beneficial.

DANTES gives lists of education centers all over the world so depending on where they may be stationed and depending on what branch of the military they are in, assistance is always accessible.

Distance learning is also available through DANTES. The Distance Learning Readiness Self-Assessment has been designed to help those considering distance learning, decide if it is right for them. An online-refresher course is available to help build their skills before they begin their courses. Prospective students also have access to distance-learning catalogs listing programs and courses offered by schools properly accredited to receive military tuition assistance.

Being able to earn a college degree while in Active Duty far from any higher-education institutions is an amazing opportunity! Thanks to the Department of Defense for making it easier for our troops to become even more outstanding!
